Texas music fest gets big dose of Colorado flavors

AUSTIN, Texas — Denver’s mammoth presence at this year’s South by Southwest music festival and conference made it clear: While Colorado has never been a dominating national player in independent music, Mile High artists are out to change that.
Everywhere music fans turned at the five-day festival, which comes to a close today in Austin, there seemed to be a little piece of Colorado.
More than 40 Colorado bands played official and unsanctioned showcases. And Colorado- based businesses were also out in full effect, showing off their wares as they complemented the nonstop soundtrack that is South by Southwest.
“We walked around the festival last night and saw some shows, and I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Jacob Hansen, frontman for Denver rock act the Knew, which played three shows while in Austin. “It’s like New Year’s and Mardi Gras mixed together.”
There were five Colorado-based showcases at this year’s festival, the largest of which, Mile-Hi Fidelity, drew solid crowds on Friday to Austin club Habana Calle.
Denver’s Nathaniel Rateliff played a moving afternoon set to a crowd of more than 100 on the backyard stage at the party, which was sponsored by Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey.
“Our reasons for coming down here are twofold,” said Jake Norris, the whiskey’s master distiller. “We are for sale in Texas, so we wanted to come and show some support for our whiskey in Texas. But it was also about supporting our Colorado bands abroad. These are the guys I go and see on a Friday night down the street.”
The party went through more than 48 Stranahan’s bottles — eight cases — at the five-hour event. Some of that whiskey was sipped by high-profile industry types who filtered through.
Author/music journalist Michael Azerrad stopped into see Rateliff, and he spoke with the singer-songwriter’s manager, Bart Dahl, about his love of the record Rateliff will release on Rounder Records later this year.
“That was huge cheap domestic flights from Longreach to Melbourne (Tullamarine) for me,” Dahl said. “I have his …continue reading

Let Us Find Common Ground

Five Compositions on Canvas

Rob Owen paints uncommon soundscapes onto Common Ground.

The Rob Owen Band has recently released Common Ground. The EP includes five carefully-crafted compositions “painted” on an adult alternative canvas of muse. With the assistance of a talented band of musicians, Rob uses his baritone voice, atypical chord progressions, and modulating meter signatures to convey tranquil and illuminating aural imagery. The Rob Owen Band has painted five uncommon soundscapes onto Common Ground.

Rob’s songwriting prowess shines on Common Ground. It also reflects a lifelong interest in Luminist landscape painting. The influence from this painting style permeates the lyrical and melodic palette used to compose each track. The EP creates a unique mix of muse that is stylistically uplifting and enlightening; all qualities that have garnished numerous positive reviews in the industry. The Santa Cruz Sentinel says of the EP, “From the first track of the CD right through the last song, something about his songs, his lyrics and how the music is so beautifully understated spoke volumes.”

Each one of Rob’s songs is an intimate and engaging three and a half minute experience on its own. The first track on the EP, “Here for You” displays his relaxing and picturesque poetic lyrics as they set the scene: “Woke up yesterday in August valley, red leaves and tall grass. The wind blew sideways; time stood still … a thousand hours could have passed.” The title track “Common Ground” is an insightful, eye-opening and soothing ballad formed around a social statement. Within the composition is a perfect blend of aesthetically soulful vocals and atmospheric guitar leads that quietly beckon the listener forward cheap flight Hervey Bay to Melbourne (All Airports) towards an epiphany. Still praying at the altar of Black Sabbath

March 4, 2010 in Uncategorized by rustysimons

Source: Ha’aretz (Original Article)

Almost every documentary movie or television program about the history of heavy metal music begins with this scene: Tony Iommi, lead guitarist of Black Sabbath, dressed in black and with a cross dangling from his necklace, enters a room (usually dimly lit) and sits down in an armchair (preferably Gothic), while the camera zooms in on the severed fingers of his right hand as he begins to recount the story of his accident at age 17, thanks to which, among other things, a new musical style was born. Noisier, powerful and more morbid than any music that preceded it, it was called heavy metal.

That was in 1965. Iommi, a lad from Birmingham, England, who had already begun playing guitar in local blues bands, was working as a welder at a sheet-metal factory. It was the afternoon shift, and Iommi was not supposed to be there: That morning he had decided to quit, but when his mother found out, she screamed at him to stop mucking about (here Iommi puts on a shrill, accented female voice) and to go back to work. As bad luck would have it, the worker who was in charge of cutting the metal was out sick, and Iommi was told to leave his welding station to fill in. Instead of cutting the sheet metal, he sliced off the tips of two fingers on his right hand. His career as a guitarist, he thought, was over.

However, the factory manager thought otherwise: He brought Iommi a record by Django Reinhardt, who was one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time despite losing the use of all but two fingers on his left hand in a fire. Iommi drew inspiration from the Gypsy guitarist, covered his own severed fingers with special thimbles that he made, and created one of the most monstrous – and influential – guitar sounds in the history of rock ‘n’ roll.

Black Sabbath’s sound was a shattering innovation in more ways than one. This was evident already in the first track of the cheap domestic flights from Adelaide to Port Hedland band’s debut album, released in February 1970. …continue reading

Susan Sarandon Takes On The Lovely Bones
Today 09:55

Over the last four decades, Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon has pulled off just about every role available, from seriously smart to sexy comedy. In her latest movie, The Lovely Bones, the 63-year old screen veteran is entering new acting territory as she assumes the role of a grandma. FemaleFirst decided to look back at the incredible career of Susan Sarandon.Born in New York in 1946 to parents of Welsh, Irish, English and Italian (Sicilian) ancestry; she was the eldest of nine children. Following her father’s lead as a performer she graduated from The Catholic University of America in 1968 with a BA in Drama.Susan landed her first film role at 21 when her then-husband Chris Sarandon took her along to one of his auditions. He was rejected but Susan scored a major role in the 1970 film, Joe. The demanding role centred on a film heavily involving the seedy issues of murder, drugs, bigotry and guns. After a brief stint in US soap opera A World Apart, Susan completely revolutionised her acting style when five years later she made The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), as the naïve, virtuous yet easily corrupted Janet. She sang in the cult comedy classic and cemented her place as a flexible actress, capable of making us laugh too.A leading female role opposite Robert Redford in The Great Waldo Pepper (1975) and one box office flop later (Hunger: 1983) Susan made a breakthrough in 1988 film Bull Durham, a film which achieved huge commercial success but also saw Susan find love with co-actor Tim Robbins twelve years her junior. Comment on this Article
Together they had two children (Susan’s second and third child after having given birth to a girl in 1985 with previous partner, Franco Amurri) and refused to marry but were still considered one of Hollywood’s strongest couples until late 2009 when they ended their 21 year relationship.Since her Bull Durham flights from Melbourne (All Airports) to Ballina success, Sarandon has worked consistently in film …continue reading
